The full-time TEFL course is a four-week intensive programme which will get you up and running quickly with the skills and knowledge you need to succeed as an English Language teacher.  The  course consists of 120 hours of face-to-face, in-class contact time and 80 hours of outside class study and assignments, and included six hours of live teaching practice.

The course is accredited at NQF level 5 by the University of Cape Town (course code: DOH1020CE).

  • Course content

    Input and planning: Learn how to teach (60 hours in-class)

    Uncover the theoretical and methodological foundations of English Language Teaching.  Inform your teaching by learning of the theory and methods that underpin TEFL from experts in the field

    Teaching Practice: Develop your teaching (60 hours in-class)

    Take what you have learned and put it into practice.  Over this time develop your teaching by reflecting on your own lessons and watching your peers.

    Assessment: Get Authentic Practice (80 hours outside of class)

    Show what you have learned and get personal feedback.  All assessments are based on skills and competencies language teachers are expected to do in the actual workplace.

     

  • Course Timetable

    The full time course takes place 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.  Participants will be expected to prepare and teach a lesson (teaching practice) around every 2 to 3 days on the course.  It is important to bear in mind that the full-time course is highly intensive and there will be no time for any other commitments over this 4 week period.

    Classes take place at UCT Hiddingh Campus in Gardens, Cape Town.

  • Admission Requirements for South Africans

    • At least 18 years old
    • Successfully completed Grade 12 (Matric)
    • University-level qualification (Current or Completed) OR Minimum 380 Faculty Point Score
    • Matric English (Higher Grade, min 50%/ English as an Additional Language, min 60%)

    Applicants over the age of 24 may also be considered be considered on the basis of previous work experience.

    All applicants must be computer literate and have access to a laptop, tablet or smart device during the course.

  • Admission Requirements for international students

    • At least 18 years old
    • Successfully completed high school to a standard where you would be accepted into a good university
    • Be proficient in English

    Applicants over the age of 24 may also be considered be considered on the basis of previous work experience.

    All applicants must be computer literate and have access to a laptop, tablet or smart device during the course.

  • Bursaries

    A small number of part-funded bursaries are available for the full-time course.  Applicants that meet the following criteria will be considered:

    • South African citizens in UCT targeted redress (historically disadvantaged) groups
    • Recent graduates or current students of the University of Cape Town, with a minimum grade average of 65%
    • Current or former recipients of UCT financial aid (GAP or NSFAS)

    Applications must be received no less than 8 weeks before the course start date to be considered and must be accompanied by all required documents.
